Volunteering with the Friends

During the past couple of years our Community and Hospital volunteers have expanded their support roles both in the Hospital itself and the role they play in the Community.

We have a dedicated team of volunteers that work on Tarrant Ward, supporting patients who do not have many visitors. From going round with the “tea trolley”, arranging flowers and even having the odd game of scrabble or cards! We always receive positive feedback and it really does make a difference to a patient’s day.

In the Community, we are now working in co-operation with the Stroke Association by providing transport on our minibus to stroke patients to and from their home twice a month to meetings in Shaftesbury. Similarly we provide transport once a month on our minibus to patients attending the Blind Club. We also transport patients once a week by car to Singing for the Brain.

Dorset County Council ceased supporting blind and partially sighted people in Dorset by paying for the RNIC Talking Book Service. As a result, the Friends are now able to pay the subscriptions for the RNIC Talking Book Service, so that people can still have access to this brilliant service.

In addition to all of this we support in total 505 clients. These clients all have a varied need for support from transport and assistance to attend medical appointments, to enabling them to do their weekly shop via our minibus service and sitting with a loved one whilst their carer has some “time out”. All clients need to be referred to us via a GP Referral Form.

Also we can change your library books, walk dogs, sit with loved ones, read newspapers and befriend anyone that is housebound. Please note we cannot guarantee any part of our service as it is all undertaken by volunteers and depends on availability.

All in all we are extremely proud of the service we offer to the community and the time and effort our volunteers dedicate as pretty amazing!

If you would like to be part of this wonderful team of volunteers, either in the hospital or in the local community please contact Lisa Deverell in the Friends office on 01258 450095.
